Legal & General responds to crime survey stats

In response to the latest British Crime Survey (BCS), Legal & Generals Malcolm Cooper has expressed the firms view that there is a correlation between recessions and spikes in burglary.

The BCS showed a 14% rise in burglary in England and Wales, as the country continues to grapple with economic difficulty despite having left recession.

Cooper went on to say that the levels of burglary/theft claims had declined since 1994 due to good work by police and insurers.

He added that, whilst it was not a simplistic relationship, the correlation between recession and rising crime figures did exist.

Earlier this week a Freedom of Information request from LV= revealed that just 44% of burglars were given custodial sentences, and of those who were not more than half (52%) reoffended.

Legal & General also offered a range of basic home security tips, including ensuring all doors and windows are locked at night or when the house is empty and installing a good alarm system.

The insurance companies can do this in two ways. They can either choose to cancel or not renew the policies. Cancellation occurs when a policy is cancelled midway before reaching its expiration date while non-renewal refers to the insurance company refusing to renew the policy after its term ends.
