While it may seem too early for Medicare open enrollment, it is happening. Here are five things that you should know about this particular open enrollment period:
1. Date changes for Medicare open enrollment period. This year open enrollment only lasts from October 15 to December 7 — completely different from previous years and starting one month earlier than normal. During this time, eligible individuals can join, drop or change a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for 2012.

Almost 1 million young adults are taking advantage of health care reform and staying on their parents’ health insurance plan. This is great news for supporters of health care reform and President Obama’s administration.
Expanding health insurance coverage to young adults was a goal of reform; unfortunately, young adults are more likely to go without health insurance more than any other age group.
