When Neighbors Drive You Crazy

If you live in apartments for very long, sooner or later you’re going to run into a problem neighbor. Problems with apartment neighbors can range from too much noise to activities which are illegal or dangerous. Unfortunately apartment living, especially within our inner cities, tend to attract a lot of the wrong crowd. No matter where your apartment is, make sure you have renters insurance, and be prepared to deal with the occasional problem with the neighbors. Here are some dos and don’t about dealing with apartment neighbors:

  • DO try to talk out problems with neighbors when possible. Often, if you approach a problem without allowing yourself to get angry, you can get the problem resolved. Chances are, your neighbor didn’t crank the stereo because he was hoping he could wake your baby up and ruin your chance to grab an afternoon nap. He probably just heard a song he liked. Give him the chance to make it right without going to war or telling the landlord.
  • DON’T call the police or the landlord every time a neighbor gets loud. Apartment dwellers will quickly figure out who is calling the authorities, and can make life more difficult for you that it’s worth.
  • DO lock your doors when you leave or when you are in the apartment by yourself. Let’s face it, until you get to know your neighbors really well, you really don’t know what they will or won’t do.
  • DON’T neglect to purchase renters insurance. In addition to protecting you from loss through fire or other disaster, most renters insurance policies will pay you if someone breaks in and steals anything from you, allowing you to replace stolen items.
  • DO get to know your landlord or landlady the best that you can. That way if you have problems, you will have already established a rapport with him or her.
  • DON’T call your landlord for problems that are minor or which you can fix yourself. In a day and age when caller ID is on every phone, he might just stop answering. If a problem is minor, wait until you pay the rent to bring it up.
  • DO get to know your neighbors. If you do have to ask them to quiet down later, it’s better if you’ve had pleasant dealings with them in the past. No one likes to be told what to do, especially if it comes from someone who they don’t even really know.
  • DON’T be nitpicky. Chances are, you have some habits that annoy them, too. Learn to live together, and learn to live with minor irritations. Everyone can get along a lot better that way.
